Overview: About Us

The Rockdale Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.   Our mission is to preserve, restore, and share the history of our community and central Texas railroading for the generations to come. To this end we operate the Rockdale Depot Museum as a charitable organization.

The Society purchased the depot in 1999.  It was being used as a storage facility at that time and had fallen into disrepair.  The current brick depot building was built in 1906.  It served as the International & Great Northern (I&GN) depot until the system was purchased by the Missouri Pacific in 1925.  After 45 years of service with MoPac,  passengers service was discontinued in 1970. The building was closed and eventually transferred to private ownership.

The Rockdale Depot Museum renovation is the result of tireless efforts by many individuals, generous donations, and grants from the Texas Historical Commission and others.  The full restoration of this historic depot was completed in 2008.  We are a non-profit organization which operates with contributions from the City of Rockdale, Milam County and our Historical Society membership.

The Depot is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a Texas Historic Landmark.
